Men may need more support amid divorce

On Behalf of | Apr 1, 2020 | Divorce

According to traditional stereotypes, men are thought of as independent, tough and resilient.  It is common to think that men in California may not need as much support as women during stressful life events such as divorce, but this is not true. In fact, divorce can be just as difficult for men as it is for women.

Recent research has shown that it may take men longer than women to get back on their feet following a divorce. One reason for this is that men tend to get a lot of their identity from their spouse. Couples usually have a circle of mutual friends, and when a marriage ends, friends may choose sides. The man can feel like all his friends are abandoning him, leaving him with no support group.

Since men are stereotypically supposed to be tough and resilient, men may be less inclined to show any kind of vulnerability. Suppressing thoughts and emotions during a stressful and emotional experience such as divorce can be very damaging. For men, there may be a natural tendency to shut down after a divorce, but this can prevent them from recovering. Instead, men should always seek counseling or professional guidance to help them through a separation.

Without a doubt, ending a marriage affects men and women differently. However, gender aside, a divorce is a difficult and stressful experience for any person to go through. Individuals in California who have questions or need professional assistance amid divorce could benefit by discussing the situation with a knowledgeable family law attorney.
