Divorce is the dissolution of a marriage. Getting your fare share of the marital estate, having sufficient financial resources to be able to build a life after divorce, and helping your children through the separation can be some of the most difficult decisions you make. Mariam will work one-on-one with you to understand your family dynamic, answer your questions, address your concerns, and create a strategy to move forward.

In Virginia, there can be either a contested or uncontested divorce. In a contested, the parties are not in agreement as to the terms of the settlement (property, finances, support, child custody and/or visitation). If mediation and settlement fail or are not an option, the court will decide the issues.

An uncontested divorce is when both parties are in agreement regarding settlement issues.

When there are children under the age of 18 involved, parties must wait a full 12 months from the date of separation to file for divorce. If there are no children involved or the children have reached majority (over the age of 18), divorces may be obtained six months after the date of separation.
