High-profile divorce illustrates the importance of prenups

On Behalf of | Nov 5, 2022 | Prenuptial Agreements

While no one marries with the intention of divorcing at some point in the future, it is prudent to have plans in place in case this does happen. By drafting a prenuptial agreement, a Virginia couple may be able to avoid the complication and stress that sometimes accompanies the property division process during a divorce. This is a common step for many famous couples, including football star Tom Brady and his former wife Gisele Bündchen

A strong prenup is crucial

The two celebrities recently announced they had finalized their divorce after 13 years of marriage. Many were surprised that the divorce was completed so quickly, especially because it had never been officially confirmed that the two parties were separated. One reason why the divorce moved quickly and smoothly was because they signed a strong prenuptial agreement previously.

The two entered their marriage with their own money, separate business entities and individual real estate properties. By signing a prenup, they were able to protect their separate interests and reduce the need to fight over marital property. This type of contract allows each party to specify what property is separate, as well as outline how they choose to divide joint property and debt.

Not just for celebrities

A prenup is not something only beneficial for the rich and famous. It is a prudent step for Virginia couples of all income levels as it can provide protection in case of a divorce. In cases where there is already a prenup, a divorce may cost less, require less time to complete and result in less stress for all parties.
